On October 18, 2024, the San Antonio-Mexico Friendship Council (SAMFCO) hosted its annual Noche de Amistad Gala, a remarkable evening filled with celebration, culture, and community. Held at the Mays Family Center at The Witte Museum, this prestigious event honored Caritas Legal Services, who received the 2024 Ohtli Award from the Mexican Government for their dedication to supporting underserved communities, particularly in the areas of immigration and human rights.

Gala Highlights: The evening, hosted by Dr. Lisa Montoya, SAMFCO Vice President and Gala Chair, included a warm welcome from Magdalena Barrera, SAMFCO Board President, and remarks from The Honorable Mayor Ron Nirenberg. Guests were treated to a dinner by True Flavors Catering, and a live auction featuring exclusive items, such as a luxury stay in Mexico City, a Cabo getaway, and unique memorabilia, including a custom-painted stadium seat from Estadio Azteca.

SAMFCO, which was founded in 1996, continues its vital mission of preserving and promoting the cultural ties between San Antonio and Mexico. The Gala’s funds contribute directly to SAMFE Grossman Scholarships, which provide financial support to deserving students in the San Antonio area.

A Night of Recognition and Gratitude: The Ohtli Award, the highest honor given by the Mexican Government to a Mexican national living outside of Mexico, was presented to Caritas Legal Services for their unwavering commitment to justice and their tireless efforts in defending the rights of migrants and low-income individuals in San Antonio. Their legal services span immigration, housing, and labor rights, making a powerful impact in the community.

As part of SAMFCO’s ongoing initiatives, proceeds from the event will support scholarships for students at Alamo Colleges, University of Incarnate Word, and Our Lady of the Lake University. SAMFCO also partners with the Consulate General of Mexico in San Antonio to continue offering crucial community programs that empower individuals through access to healthcare, financial literacy, and education.

SAMFCO’s Commitment to the Community: SAMFCO’s efforts have grown over the years, continuing to strengthen diplomatic relations between San Antonio and Mexico. In celebration of 200 years of U.S.-Mexico diplomatic relations, SAMFCO supports cultural activities such as art exhibitions, culinary festivals, workshops, and major events like El Grito de Independencia and Día de los Muertos.

Thank You to Our Supporters: SAMFCO extends special thanks to the Círculo de Amistad Oro and Plata sponsors, as well as to all who attended and supported the event. Their continued involvement ensures the success of SAMFCO’s mission to bridge cultures and provide educational opportunities for students in San Antonio.
